THE WINNING BOOKS
FIRST PRIZE Hugo Alcol (Spain) »Archipiélago«
This enigmatic book is both a puzzle and a delight at the same time. As the photos show anything from a Spanish social event, to a weird woman with a rabbit and a dead rat floating upside down in a green pool. Although difficult to quite see what is going on, we are constantly drawn back in to try and understand the narrative and we are wanting to come back for another view. It gets under our skin, and that is a rare attribute.
Martin Parr
SECOND PRIZE Zeynep Kayan (Turkey) »Untitled«
Enigmatic images and a tight edit of repetitive motifs combine to make a rich puzzle of a book. The jury all liked this book without being able to say why, and that’s a compliment.
Jason Fulford
THIRD PRIZE Hannes Wiedemann (Germany) »Grinders«
We were all both fascinated and disgusted by Grinders, ‘an encounter with DIY cyborgs’ by Hannes Wiedemann. There is something absolutely repulsive and yet current and relevant about this community of ‘body-hackers’ who perform the somewhat disturbing ritual of implanting devices and gadgets into their human body. Wiedmann portrays body-hacking by mingling an almost surgical distance with a visceral approach and he does it with great balance, blissfully staying out of poignancy and judgment. A disquieting feeling of cyborg lust is perceivable on the few faces that appear in the dummy. I once met a very talented artist affected by schizophrenia who believed the government had implanted a microchip under his skin to spy on his subversive life, as he had been part of an extremely leftist movement during the Italian Years of Lead. Who would have thought that what can be seen as the paranoia of a problematic activist artist of the 1970s could become, decades after, a real fetishistic ritual of people who take pleasure in having a mechanical or electronic device embedded in their body?

KASSEL PHOTOBOOK AWARD 2017 – THE EXPERTS SELECTION
Since 2008 experts have been asked to name their favorite photobook of the previous year and to justify their choice. This has resulted in around 30 books every year from renowned jurors from all over the world. The books showcase the current state of play in a medium that is incredibly lively and mobile. As forms, they range from very simple magazine-style publications to traditionally crafted books as well as handmade one-off items and heavy, exclusive, large format products in slip cases and cassettes. The essence of printed photography and the strong narrative force of photography in book form can be seen in the high-class selection of books included every year. Some of the works are already among the masterpieces and classics in the history of photography, while others are still waiting to be discovered. In 2008, a world’s first ›Best Of Experts‹ photobook listing was undertook, the aim being to create an annual overview of the most outstanding photographic books. At the time, it seemed like a culmination point. Today it feels more like the medium is just being discovered.
